Welcome to the North Wales Kelpie Website
The Breed
Today's modern, top quality working Kelpie was first established in Australia during the mid 1800s. The breed is a natural gathering dog, using eye, bark and bite to move all types of livestock, including sheep, cattle, pigs and even poultry.
Kelpies are keen, active and very intelligent animals. They are renowned for their stamina, endurance and ability to work under extreme conditions. They prefer to manage stock in a standing or in a crouching position.
The general appearance of the Kelpie is of medium size (about 17" – 23" in height), with a short coat and erect ears. They can be black, red, blue, fawn or cream in colour, with or without tan markings. The Kelpie should move with a good length stride, smoothly and effortlessly.
